The Most Popular Churches and Chapels in Austin: Cost + Capacity

Austin, Texas, has long been celebrated as a vibrant wedding destination. In fact, its national popularity has led to an oversaturation of wedding venues. Meanwhile, the list of popular churches and chapels has remained consistent, creating an imbalance of supply and demand. As a result, it can get pretty tricky if you’re trying to match the availability of a specific church and reception space.

This guide will help you navigate the best non-denominational churches and chapels in Austin, comparing their costs, capacities, and unique features to find the perfect venue for your special day.

Why Choose a Church or Chapel Wedding in Austin

Opting for a church or chapel wedding in Austin provides numerous benefits:

  • Historic Charm: Many churches boast centuries-old architecture and timeless elegance, adding a sense of tradition and grandeur to your ceremony.
  • Architectural Appeal: From cathedral-style ceilings to modern minimalist designs, Austin’s churches offer a wide range of architectural styles to match your aesthetic preferences.
  • Tradition and Symbolism: For some, a church setting provides a meaningful backdrop with symbolic elements that can enhance the spiritual aspect of your vows.
  • Practical Perks: Many venues come equipped with built-in officiants, existing décor, and comprehensive services, simplifying the planning process.

I meet a lot of couples who maybe grew up going to church, but fell away from it as they went through life. They are craving a spiritual element (and they know it will make mom happy), but aren’t feeling inspired to sign themselves and their partner up as lifetime members just yet. I also work with a lot of couples who are from different religious backgrounds and simply want a space that reflects them both. If these experiences resonate with you, you’re going to find a lot of value in this article!

Fun fact: In 2022, famous singer and actress Jessica Simpson married Nick Lashay at the Smith Family chapel. Vera Wang designed her dress, and she also wore an 11-carat Harry Winston diamond headband attached to her veil. Fast forward to 2025 and this area is undergoing major highway construction, so please heed our construction warnings.

Chapel #3: Ian’s Chapel at Camp Lucy

Location: Dripping Springs, TX
Capacity: Up to 170 guests
Cost Range: $14,500 for rental of the entire venue

Key Highlights:

  • Historic Structure: Originally a Catholic church in Vietnam, the 19th-century French colonial chapel is constructed from ironwood, known for its strength and durability.
  • Climate Control: Ensures a comfortable environment regardless of weather conditions.
  • Turn-Key Service: Camp Lucy provides comprehensive event staff to handle setup, coordination, and cleanup.

Booking Tips:

  • Optimal Capacity: To maximize guest experience and views, I recommend you keep the guest count below 150, even though the venue can accommodate 170 guests
  • Early Reservations: Due to high demand, secure your date well in advance, ideally 12-18 months ahead.

Ian’s Chapel at Camp Lucy is simply magical. The owner, Whitt Hanks, couldn’t stand the idea of this chapel being torn down and he shipped the entire thing across the ocean to Dripping Springs, Texas. It was the first venue erected on the Camp Lucy property, starting a legacy that will last generations.

Booking Tips:

  • Lighting: Be sure to pick a photographer who is experienced with capturing back-lit ceremonies. The window behind the altar is gorgeous, but difficult to photograph if your photographer is inexperienced.
  • Book Early: Secure your date well in advance, especially during peak summer months.

Hidden River Ranch is a super special place. I’ve not only planned weddings there, but I’ve stayed overnight in the cabins with girlfriends. The couple who own and manage the property are salt-of-the-earth wonderful, and genuinely care about each and every client.

Canyonwood Ridge is one of my favorite venues in terms of rain plan. The property was professionally designed to be an all-weather event venue, and it shows!

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Austin Church or Chapel

Selecting the perfect Austin wedding chapel involves evaluating several key factors to ensure your wedding day is both beautiful and stress-free:

1. Budget Range

  • Venue Fees: Understand the total cost, including any additional fees for services like coordinators, lighting, or sound systems. It’s common to pay the organist or cantor ~$300 for their services.
  • Inclusions: Determine what is included in the venue fee, such as chairs, parking, and floral arrangements.

2. Guest Count

  • Capacity: Choose a chapel that comfortably accommodates your guest list without feeling overcrowded.
  • Space Layout: Ensure there is enough space for your wedding party if you’re planning on a large group. The older chapels tend to have smaller altars.

3. Available Dates

  • Booking in Advance: Popular chapels often book up well in advance, especially during peak wedding seasons. It can take a lot of time to coordinate their availability with your wedding reception space.
  • Flexibility: If your preferred date is unavailable, consider alternative dates or chapels with more availability.

4. Location Convenience

  • Proximity to Accommodations: Choose a chapel that is conveniently located near hotels or accommodations for out-of-town guests.
  • Accessibility: Ensure the venue is easily accessible for all guests, including those with mobility issues.

5. Parking Options

  • Availability: Confirm that the chapel provides ample parking for all guests.
  • Covered Parking: Especially important during hot or rainy weather, covered parking options can enhance guest comfort.

6. Venue Amenities

  • Built-In Officiants: Some chapels offer in-house officiants, simplifying the ceremony planning process.
  • Décor and Setup: Check if the chapel provides existing décor or if you need to bring your own decorations. Some churches require that you leave the altar decor for weekend services.
  • Audio and Visual Equipment: Ensure the venue has the necessary equipment for music and ceremony audio.

7. Vendor Policies

  • Preferred Vendors: Some chapels that are part of a larger wedding venue have preferred vendors for catering, photography, and other services. Understand if you can bring your own or need to use their list.
  • Vendor Restrictions: Be aware of any restrictions or additional costs associated with bringing in your own officiant.

8. Seasonal Considerations

  • Weather Plans: Ensure the chapel has a reliable plan for getting guests from their cars to the indoor space if the weather doesn’t play in your favor.
  • Best Seasons: Consider the best times of year for your ceremony to take advantage of optimal weather and lighting conditions. Catholic churches have strict rules regarding decor during the season of Lent.

9. Photography Limitations

  • Access Areas: Some chapels have restricted areas for photographers. Confirm what areas you can access to maximize your photo opportunities.
  • Lighting: Understand the lighting conditions and whether additional lighting equipment is necessary for high-quality photos.

By carefully evaluating these factors, you can select a wedding chapel in Austin that aligns with your vision, budget, and logistical needs, ensuring a seamless and memorable wedding day.
